Power Tools - Woodworking
Power tools increase efficiency but require careful attention to safety.
Table Saw
The workhorse of most woodshops. Used for ripping (cutting along grain) and crosscutting.
Safety
- Always use the blade guard when possible
- Use push sticks for narrow cuts
- Never reach over the blade
- Stand to the side, not directly behind the blade
- Use the rip fence OR miter gauge, never both together
Band Saw
Continuous loop blade. Best for curves, resawing (cutting thick stock thinner), and irregular shapes.
Uses
- Curved cuts
- Resawing thick boards
- Band saw boxes
- Cutting tenons
Drill Press
Stationary drill for precise, perpendicular holes.
- Adjust speed for material and bit size
- Clamp workpiece securely
- Use a backer board to prevent tearout
Router
Spinning bit for edge profiles, dadoes, and decorative work.
- Move against the bit rotation (climb cutting is dangerous)
- Take multiple shallow passes for deep cuts
Sanders
- Random orbit sander - General purpose, leaves no swirl marks
- Belt sander - Aggressive material removal
- Spindle sander - Curved interior edges
General Safety
- Wear safety glasses at all times
- Use hearing protection
- No loose clothing, jewelry, or untied hair
- Let the tool reach full speed before cutting
- Disconnect power before changing blades/bits
