Strange Loop: A Fiction
An experimental short fiction piece written with ChatGPT exploring themes of recursion and self-reference.
Concept
Inspired by Douglas Hofstadter’s work on strange loops and self-referential structures, I asked ChatGPT to write a short story that references its own creation.
The Experiment
Prompts explored:
- Write a story about an AI writing a story about an AI
- Include a character who realizes they’re in a narrative
- Have the story question its own existence
Themes
- Self-reference and recursion
- The nature of creativity
- Boundaries between author and creation
- Meta-fiction traditions
Observations
ChatGPT handles meta-narrative competently, drawing on its training data of self-referential literature. The results range from clever to slightly unsettling.
